WORDS FOR THE “WORD”
In the Greek, there are three basic words used for our one word “word”. They are: GRAPHE, LOGOS, AND RHEMA. These three words together give the student a complete picture of God’s plan for the study of the Word of God.
GRAPHE
The Graphe is the written Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16-17). “All scripture (word, graphe) is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
The Bible, regardless of the version, is the authoritative and complete revelation of God’s plan and purpose for mankind. In the Bible can be found God’s complete revelation of salvation, culminating in Jesus Christ. Reading and study of the graphe is essential to “life and godliness”.
LOGOS
The Logos of God is the incarnate Word, or the Word made Flesh (also called the Living Word, the Bread of Life, etc.). Jesus Christ is the Living Word or Logos, which according to Hebrews 4:12 is even more powerful than the Rhema of God, or a word from God. “For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
As a believer, a man receives the Logos or Word made flesh through confession and belief (Rom. 10:9,10), at which point man receives salvation. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
RHEMA
As noticed above, a Rhema is a specific word from the Lord for individual Christians. This word releases faith to take action. Often, the Holy Spirit will speak to Christians of the Living Word (logos) through the written word (graphe) which will provide a revealed word (rhema) to give guidance or release power. All three of the different manifestations of the Word are necessary and available for the believing Christian.
